Natural gas will continue to be important as a primary energy source in Germany and throughout Europe. At the same time, we are investing in new and promising technology as well as secondary sources of energy – hydrogen, for instance.

Climate-neutral Storage

The injection and withdrawal of gas require energy and, therefore, cause emissions. We have been working hard to reduce these, but they cannot be avoided completely. That's why we compensate for all remaining CO2 emissions with the voluntary purchase of reduction certificates, so-called Verified Emission Reduction (VER). By doing so, we compensate not only for the CO2 emissions of the gas which we burn but for the gas and power used in the entire storage process. This process helps us support climate protection initiatives such as renewable energy and reforestation projects and is how we guarantee our customers climate-neutral storage – at no additional cost.

 

Green Hydrogen for the Energy Transformation

Hydrogen – in particular green hydrogen – is a versatile energy carrier and will take on a crucial role in the success of the energy transformation and in protecting the climate. Using Power-to-Gas derived from renewable energy sources, it can balance and cover bottlenecks or shortages in an ecologically sound way. To do this, however, the gas must first be stored in large volumes – and precisely that is our specialty. In partnership with the research initiative HYPOS, we are working on the development of a research platform working on the storage of hydrogen in a salt cavern – the world’s first cavern storage facility for green hydrogen.

Bad Lauchstädt Energy Park

The storage facility will be created at our existing Bad Lauchstädt location in Saxony Anhalt. Initially, operations will be limited to a testing and research capacity.
Alongside this storage facility, a separate project including a wind farm and accompanying large scale electrolysis at a capacity of 30 MW is planned. This will mean that the caverns are supplied directly with green hydrogen. The project is establishing itself as an important column of the potential real-world laboratory taking form in the HYPOS region.
